Assassin's Creed

The first time I had the opportunity to see a trailer of Assassin's Creed , then still named simply Creed, I had the impression of find me in front of a Grand Theft Auto Middle Ages, with the added ability to scale virtually all buildings in the city.

Those old premises (old since we are talking of 2003, and the game was released in 2005) have been retained only in part: there are great and beautiful city to explore, even vertically, joined together by a zone (the Kingdom) full of small settlements and military fortifications, There is a fascinating story and a well-characterized protagonist. But there is a but. Lacks the variety of situations GTA and, ironically, the many possibilities offered by the city are not exploited at all. So much so that, apart from the hundreds of collectibles scattered throughout the game world (these are effigies and flags of different factions fighting each other, basically), there is little to do outside the main quest, which commit to ten hours per user.

Plot and character level, we said. True, true, one could say that the vast majority of the charm of a game crippled and incomplete development plan in this production as Ubisoft is in these two factors combined environment, consists essentially of the three cities of Damascus, Acre and Jerusalem, to which are added above the village of Masyaf and small groups scattered around the game world. The three "cities" are faithfully reproduced, and it is impossible not to be impressed by the work of artists and programmers. In my opinion, the most successful cities is the present capital of Syria: I confess that more than once, from the top of a minaret, I was several minutes admiring the scenery below. The charm of the setting is amplified by the soundtrack by Jesper Kyd, never intrusive and well integrated into context.

Taking up the thread, the story is set in the last days of 2012 and sees as its protagonist a young bartender, Desmond Miles, who was kidnapped and segregated in the labs of a multinational company that, through a mysterious machine, wants to go back to the life of the ancestors of ours, particularly of Altair, a member of the Assassins Confratenita lived during the years of the Crusades, in order to find out where and how to retrieve the strange artifact called "Fruits of Eden." However, the real heart of the action is not our near future but the past sessions in which they will only monitor Desmond mere interludes that could clarify nuances of the plot. The strong point is experience in the events that took place at the time of Altair, which is the height of the Third Crusade with Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in facing them on the battlefields of Jaffa. As I said, Altair is a member of the Assassins, as opposed to the faction of the Templars, and the mission of the ancestor is the Middle East to make it out of the nine leaders of the sect enemies, who seek to manipulate the outcome of the conflict and the fate of humanity in their liking. But, as is constantly repeated by the prelates of the Brotherhood, "Nothing is real and everything is permitted" and betrayals and plot twists will not fail to tackle missions.

The murders are structured as follows: You go to the city, carry out the investigations (in this regard, there are three types: espionage, in which just find a secluded place to sit and listen, beating, where you'll get information with his fists, and theft, which will be followed determianti subjects from their pockets and then remove the documents that are looking for van), we obtain permission from the representative of the Brotherhood in the city, killing and getting away from the goal inseguotori . It must be said that by far the mechanism is tedious, partly because of the ridiculous difficulty of the missions, factor, that the low level of challenge offered, in which now the French Ubisoft are repeat offenders. Just to give an example, I started to have trouble just for killing the last target, Robert de Sable, that is, after nine hours of solid game and near the end of the adventure.

playful addition to these defects, the first episode of the brand also has major technical problems. I state that I played the PlayStation 3 version of the game, and Sony sull'ammiraglia the product is suffering from obvious visual defects (in short, aliasing, especially during the "modern" and tearing are the order of the day ) and large gaps techniques: continuous freezing, which oblige to power cycle the console, parts of the scenario are shown, non-player characters that appear suddenly, or floating heads stuck in the stairs ... I could go on for a while, but even so I think I made the right 'idea.

closing, I can say that Assassin's Creed , despite its monotony and its problems, is not a game bad, rather the quality of the plot pushes to keep playing, but from what should be the first example of what it was possible to do with the (then) next-gen consoles, we expected much more from the technical point of view and play. In short, a wasted opportunity. Were it not for the already highly praised appearance narrative, would have had at least one point less.
